Primavera P6 Training Class in San Diego, California

BuildingPoint Pacific wrapped up a six week long Primavera P6 training session with Rudolph and Sletten (R&S) last month in their San Diego, California office. The class consisted of project managers, assistant project managers, and superintendents in a two-hour per week course, either in class or through live online training. Due to the complexity of R&S’s jobsite and projects, some students learned on the jobsite and others studied in the class. The skill levels of the students ranged from never opened the software to basic familiarity with the software. The class’s goal was to make the students familiar with Primavera P6 by opening the software, creating a schedule, maintaining and updating the schedule, printing and exporting the schedule.

The topics covered in the class were:

  • P6 Program Overview and Navigation
  • Scheduling Best Practices
  • Customizing P6 Toolbars
  • Creating Projects
  • Creating and Modifying Work Breakdown Structures
  • Adding/ Deleting and Moving Activities
  • Understanding Duration Types

“I had never used P6 before attending the class. Now I know how to open and navigate through the program. The P6 course will be a big help to me in the future when I get into creating schedules. The course manual will get me through any questions that I have with P6. Just wanted to say thank you for your time and patience with the class.”

– Charles Sanchez, Assistant Superintendent, R&S

A great takeaway from the class was the importance of having a superintendent knowing the mechanics and best practices of a critical path method (CPM) schedule. A CPM schedule is a tool in the construction industry and when superintendents are spending more time managing a schedule than field operations a professional scheduler/planner is an invaluable resource to have on the team.  Superintendents should be able to create or modify the schedule but ensuring to contact a professional scheduler/planner to manage the schedule.
